The General Counsel reports to the Inspector General, provides legal advice, and is responsible for agency compliance with applicable law.

Illustrative tasks:  Develop and monitor policy and procedures to ensure compliance. Monitor and review existing and proposed law for impact on the OIG’s work. Assess legal sufficiency of incoming information and legal elements for investigations. Help plan and direct investigations. Review and edit reports for quality assurance and legal sufficiency. Represent the OIG in agency communications, contract negotiations, and litigation. Supervise and participate in ethics compliance, enforcement efforts, and public records responses. Research and advise on accreditation standards, human resources, security, information technology, risk management, procurement, data and records management, external communications, and other agency functions. Develop, direct, and supervise legal staff.

The ideal candidate will have over 20 years of successful experience as an attorney in (1) government agency representation in transactions and civil litigation; (2) local government operations or oversight; and (3) the investigation, prosecution, or defense of economic crimes or public corruption.  Relevant professional certifications are desirable. Experience in providing advice or training to elected officials is preferred. The ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, verbally and written, is necessary.

Minimum requirements are a law degree from an accredited law school, active membership in the Florida Bar, and significant experience with legal issues affecting government agencies.
