President’s Message

Dear Association Members and Friends,

It is with incredible sadness that I write to tell you of the passing of my dear friend, longtime AIG board member and 2nd Vice-President, Barry Kluger.  Barry had been seriously ill for the past year and undergoing treatments that ultimately proved unsuccessful.  Barry has been home the last few weeks being comforted by his family and receiving hospice care. He passed away surrounded by those he loved the most, his wife and children.

Barry had a long and successful career as both an Inspector General for New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority and previous to that, 32 years as a successful prosecutor with the Bronx District Attorney, rising through the ranks to become the Chief Assistant in that office. Upon joining the IG world, Barry quickly became an indispensable part of the AIG, volunteering both his wisdom and time at levels that would surprise most people, always unheralded and without complaint.

Professional accolades aside, Barry was a genuine, kind and caring man who loved his family deeply. He always had a smile and a funny story that could make you quickly forget whatever minor headache was in front of you at the moment. Personally, I am heartbroken over the loss of my friend. Barry was one of the first people I met from the IG community, and we instantly became friends because we had so much in common. Such a strong friendship between a brash New Yorker and a lawyer from Louisiana might seem unusual at first glance, but we learned quickly that we were both former prosecutors, college football fans, and loved to visit with dear friends over good Scotch. With any thorny issue, Barry always gave his opinion directly according to a lifetime of experience and wisdom, and was always a problem solver. His wisdom, insight and humor will be sorely missed.

There is not enough space here for me to truly express the depth of loss that I am feeling right now, both personally and on behalf of the IG community. All I can say is Rest in Peace, Barry. You lived life well, loved your family and left an indelible mark upon all of us. See you on the other side, my friend.

Very Respectfully,
