King County, Washington is searching for an executive to serve as its Director for the Office of Law Enforcement Oversight. The Director for the Office of Law Enforcement Oversight is an exempt position that is appointed by the King County Council to a four-year term. The Director serves as the lead administrator of the Office of Law Enforcement Oversight (OLEO), which was established in the County’s Charter to represent the rapidly increasing and evolving demands for justice from the public to hold the King County Sheriff’s Office accountable for providing fair and just police services. Through its independent review, OLEO seeks to instill confidence and public trust in the integrity of Sheriff’s Office operations and in the effectiveness and professionalism of its employees. OLEO conducts outreach to the communities the Sheriff’s Office serves and provides oversight and recommendations through reviews and investigations of misconduct complaints and systemic issues. OLEO issues public reports and makes recommendations on policies and practices to the Sheriff’s Office. Reporting to the Director are a Deputy Director, an Office Manager, and a Community Engagement Manager. The office is staffed with 7 positions overall and has a biennial budget of $2.87 million.
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related field, or a Juris Doctorate will demonstrate sufficient formal education, but experience may be substituted for education. This position requires at least five years of progressively responsible experience leading an organization and performing complex investigations or reviews related to personnel or labor issues, human or civil rights issues, or law enforcement related issues.
The salary range for the OLEO Director is $137,369 to $184,746, depending upon qualifications. King County offers an excellent benefits package.
